All Fine & Dandy

For the second time this week I awoke to snow so what better to counteract the bitter cold than a pink Crimplene catsuit, big hair and some massive sunglasses?

It was a bit too icy to negotiate the hill of doom, our usual walking route into town, so we went via Dandys Walk, an atmospheric Georgian alleyway. You'll find a great photo HERE.

Today's mission was to pick up a pair of brogues we'd left with the cobbler last week and to replace my beloved Barry M lipstick (shade 52) and Cobalt nail paint, which had run out after two years of near-daily wear.

Naturally we had to pop into the chazzas. The 1960s St Michael nylon shirt and 1950s Mohair & Alpaca car coat are now in Jon's wardrobe. Sadly the green leather Made in Milan riding boots and red gloves are far too small for me so they'll be off to Vintage Village this coming Sunday to find a small-footed, dainty-handed vintage lover. Melamine's a big seller with the VW crowd so this vintage aqua set will be on one of our festival pitches over the Summer.

Wearing: Bri-nylon blouse (dearest Curtise), wooden beads (darling Tania), 1960s psychedelic maxi (£10, Vintage fair, 2007), Vintage 1950s Maflline specs (20p from a flea market, re-glazed to my prescription by Glasses Complete)

As our inbox is gradually filling up with festival organisers wanting some Kinky Melon action at their events, I thought I'd knock up a few summery skirts for our pitch to use up some of my overflowing Ottoman of vintage fabric. By the rate I'm going I should be able to close the lid by the end of the week.

1970s catsuit (Baboushka Vintage), Fake fur & leather coat (£10, British Heart Foundation), vintage Ted Lapidus sunnies (£2.99, Acorns Hospice, 2009)
Right, back to the sewing machine, I've a nightmare of a blouse which I'm determined to finish if it kills me...

See you soon!

  11. I've been thinking about doing stuff to old white tee shirts - including dyeing them and altering the neck.

Btw I've re-carved the sitar lion - I knew it was back to front and it irritated me!

  13. Your Crimplene catsuit is a beautiful shade of pink. Your big hair and sunnies look great. I love that bright yellow puffy sleeved Bri-nylon blouse. You look (and obviously are) very highly skilled sitting at that sewing machine - it looks like a very good one too. Best wishes for success at your pitches and for enjoyment of this upcoming (hopefully warmer) Spring starting two and a half weeks from now.

  15. Yay, flash the Crimplene, baby! You do indeed look fine and dandy in candy pink and fur, all the better to stick two fingers up at the bonkers weather!
Ooh, shame about the boots and gloves, they are fab and they'll make someone very happy. As will your wonderful skirts, bright and cheery and gorgeous! Such fun to see you hard at work, and of course it's a brilliant idea to have some of your home-sewn pieces to sell in the summer. I can see a whole Kinky Melon retro fashion line being developed...
Good luck with the blouse - you'll crack it, I'm sure. Love you! xxxxx

  20. that catsuit was made for you...you're so smoking hot in that one!

the fake fur and leather coat is amazing!

Vintage clothes is really the best. They don't make the clothes as fun as they used to...I don't know why.

  21. What better indeed? (Than a pink, crimplene catsuit) - until you have to take off the warm coat to nip to the ladies' - but well worth the momentary chill.
I sighed over the boots. Hope some Cinderella-tiny-shoe-size person experiences great joy when she tries them on and finds that they fit!

  22. Dandy Walk is the ideal backdrop for that superb outfit and pink crimplene the perfect pick me up on cold snowy days.
Love that scene of you hard at work on the Singer (?) in your reading specs. Your kitchen is a riot of colour...I'm eagerly awaiting Thursday...it is this week, isn't it? xx

  27. You are rocking that catsuit Vix! I've never seen a crimplene one before - I just love it! x

  28. Only you, dear Vix, could regard those purple boots as 'basic' footwear! They appear to advantage with leather mini's, velvet maxi's and now, tra la!, pink crimplene catsuits.

Is there a retro-fad beginning for retro-fitted massive sunnies? (Just came from admiring Goody's at Eat the Blog.) Must delve deeper into my drawers and see if I can find a brassy pair I adored back in the day when my hair was longer and my eyesight keener.

  29. I absolutely love you in that pink catsuit, you look bloomin' fantastic! And with your post India glow, you are such a welcome antidote to the British winter. Your huggy bear coat is perfect with it. I hope you weren't flashing for too long - it's been bitter! Dandys Walk is a top name for a thoroughfare and I love the lettering too. I bet Walsall was amazing in its heyday. Look at you looking all cute and industrious at your machine - knocking those Kinky Melon skirts out. This blouse with a truculent nature is intriguing me now. Must be quite something! Xxxxxx

  30. I sure would love to live in your town and then be able to clap my eyes on you in real life, dressed in one of your marvelous outfits. You must just make peoples' day!

The catsuit is so good on you, and it was great to get a little look at you at your sewing machine. xo

  31. Nope it's no good I just can't feel love for pink. I was at the opticians this week and the girl helping me choose new frames brought a pair of pink ones and was all look lovely pink frames and I'm like NO!!! NOT pink! she did look a bit startled poor thing.

I love the name Dandy's Walk it brings to mind the most wonderful images. x

  32. Those old Georgian walls must be gasping at your audacious frippery. They'd be begging you to walk down there more if they could talk. Pink crimplene with a honking huge pendant, big hair and a fake-fur-trimmed coat. There is nothing quite like it - you're in a class of your own. Divine. Truly.

  33. Pink cat suit that says take that Winter!! I love the look of a cat suit but they aren't very toilet friendly are they? Maybe that is just me, small bladder!! Those skirts should sell fast, so beautiful and summery.

  34. Properly fine and dandy you are! That glorious pink catsuit gives winter a kick in the bits. Come on spring!
I love those skirts. I agree with Curtise...a Kinky line in the future. You'll ace the blouse...can't wait to see it.

  50. That's so weird you mention Barry M shade 52, because I used to have it! I literally threw it out this week because I don't go to burlesque nights anymore and it was never really 'me' anyway.

Incidentally, have you seen the Topshop ads featuring Cara Delevigne in a very '70s brown minidress? Found a pic on this blog post here:
    http://www.mtv.com/news/2040536/cara-delevingne-topshop-campaign/

I think you'll have much more of a market for those skirts this year than usual, it's all looking very retro!
