Vintage Hairstyling Challenge - Day Three (An Attempt at a Curl)

And so to day 3 of Kitty's hair-styling challenge and today it's curly.
As any woman of my age will know curls instantly bring back memories of the awful 1980's and the ubiquitous spiral wave.

This was me in all my permed glory back in 1985 and yes, I'm a natural blonde.

Today's criteria was as follows:
1. Brushes and combs, as required
2. Hairspray OR setting lotion OR a similar substitute that works for you
3. ONE kind of curling method. This could be rollers and pins, hot sticks (whatever they are), a curling wand...or anything else that works for you that I may not be aware of.

Vintage off-the-shoulder blouse (Car Boot Sale 50p), Customised shorts and wood mules (Jumble sale, 20p per piece), Goldette 1950's pendant (Salvation Army 99p), Hair Flower (Presented free with a curry), Gilt hoop earrings (Found in the depths of my jewellery stash)
As mentioned previously I'm rather low maintenance, Lush's Karma solid shampoo and Jungle conditioner and a wide toothed comb are my haircare repertoire. I don't possess any styling products. For my waves (curls are nigh on impossible) I used my Babyliss curling irons but got fed up halfway through and pinned the remainder up.

A bit 1950's perhaps?

Kitty's done another magnificent job, pop over and check out her 1950's pin curls.

  2. The curls are lovely! That's exactly the kind of curl I try to achieve every time I work on my hair with my tongs, but it so rarely comes out like that!
Love the shorts too! *sighs* I feel such nostalgia for the summer.

  3. I think your locks are lovely:)

My hair does NOT hold a curl..perhaps too long, or it weighs too much....

    Have a fabulous day!

  5. You look so different with blonde hair. Blonde may be your natural colour but somehow dark hair looks right for you. Love those mules, worn with the shorts they show off your fabulous legs to perfection. xxx

  7. My hair is about 3cm long so a curl is out of the question. Yours is too long to curl properly but how about the perm??? Not too many accessories in those days - a very pared-down look. When did you go more "arty"?

  8. My hair refuses to hold even a wave - very jealous of this relaxed, beachy style! Love the flower too. x

  9. OMG, I refuse to believe that blond girl is you - for a sec, I thought its Jennifer Grey:-) I like loose curls like you have done..and I love this top of yours!!

  10. Today's hair do looks really natural and I like the loose waves. Your photo brings back memories, as I had a perm in '85 too, although yours looked better than mine, as mine came out too tight - not a good look!

  13. I think curls look lovely but are very had to produce and ultimately maintain, I never seem to be able to get them to stay in place.

I love your honesty in this challenge, and it’s nice to see a snippet from the past, I would have never known you were a natural blonde. And the flower is gorgeous xx

  14. Wow! what a difference a hair color makes. You look very sultry with dark hair that it's hard to imagine you as a blonde. That perm was hot back in the day and that's a great picture of you. Love your hairstyling challenge!

  18. Love your perm photo - can't believe you are a natural blonde as I'm so used to you with your black hair. I'm a natural blonde but look rubbish if I went dark. The curls you did are understated and your outfit is wonderful!

  23. 50p for that blouse, what a great deal! The UK is notoriously expensive (at least to us Americans), but I'm starting to think you guys get better deals on the vintage goods : ). I love this outfit.

And the hair is cute too. It's got the vintage vibe, without trying too hard.

  25. Oh I had that perm too - didn't everyone back then? Did you used to hang your head upside down, spray a can of hairspray on then whoosh back up again? Voila! Even BIGGER curls! And boofy hair! I have no patience for hair either - that's what hats are for;). Your top is beautiful xo

  26. A natural blonde??? To me you are a natural dark-head, Vix. I love the black hair on you and these soft curls are very flattering. 50s? Don't know. Bit 70s maybe... xxx

  27. My god the perms of the eighties. I once had one that made my hair square and of course, the obligatory afro comb to go with. I have a picture somewhere of me in my square perm that took about 18 months to grow out: awful!

You've done a great job with your hair and I love the outfit ... ;0)

  30. Especially love your make up in today's post. I have to say that it is hard to imagine you as yourself in 1985 but I am sure we all find that as we evolve and change as we go through life xx
